Reconstructive surgery
Reconstructive surgery is a branch of plastic surgery that specializes in restoring the form and function of body structures that have been damaged or altered by accidents, illnesses, malformations or operations. The aim is to restore the natural anatomy, mobility and aesthetics as far as possible.
Typical areas of application for reconstructive surgery are
- Reconstruction after tumor removal (e.g. skin cancer or breast cancer)
- Correction of congenital malformations (e.g. hypospadias, cleft lip and palate)
- Treatment of injuries (e.g. after traffic accidents, burns or tissue loss)
- Reconstruction after infections or chronic wounds
- Restoration and reinforcement of tissue in intimate surgery
reconstructive surgery techniques:
- Tissue transplants (flap plasty)
- Skin grafts
- Use of biological tissue replacement materials (e.g. skin matrix)
- Use of autologous fat grafts (lipofilling)
Reconstructive surgery is not only aimed at functional restoration, but also takes aesthetic aspects into account in order to achieve a harmonious, natural result.
Important note:
In many cases, reconstructive procedures are medically necessary and – depending on the indication – are covered by health insurance.
