Fertility
Fertility describes the physical ability of a man to father a child. For this to be possible, his body must produce a sufficient number of healthy and motile sperm that are able to fertilize a female egg. These sperm are produced in the testicles and released via the vas deferens during ejaculation.
Good fertility depends on several factors, including
- Sperm count: How many sperm are contained in the ejaculate (seminal fluid).
- Sperm quality: How well the sperm are built and whether they can move well.
- Hormone balance: Certain hormones such as testosterone control sperm production.
- Testicular health: Diseases, injuries or varicoceles (varicose veins in the testicles) can impair fertility.
If a man is unable to conceive, this can mean that no sperm are produced at all or that they are insufficient or non-functional. In such cases, it can be difficult or impossible for a couple to conceive a child naturally. A medical examination (e.g. a spermiogram) can provide information on possible causes.
