Fertility
Fertility refers to a person’s ability to conceive or produce offspring naturally. In men, fertility refers to the production of functional sperm and the ability to fertilize a woman’s egg through sexual intercourse.
Various factors influence male fertility:
- Sperm quality: This includes the number, motility (motility) and shape (morphology) of the sperm.
- Hormone balance: In particular, a normal testosterone level and sufficient production of the hormones LH (luteinizing hormone) and FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) are necessary for healthy sperm production in the testicles.
- Health of the urogenital tract: This includes the epididymis, vas deferens and glands such as the prostate.
- Lifestyle factors: Diet, stress, nicotine, alcohol or drug consumption and environmental factors can have a negative impact on fertility.
Disorders of male fertility are summarized under the term infertility. This can be caused by genetic factors, hormonal disorders, infections, anatomical anomalies or external influences.
Male fertility is typically examined by means of a spermiogram, in which various characteristics of the sperm are analyzed in the laboratory.
In medical practice, maintaining or restoring fertility – for example after illness, surgery or hormonal changes – is an important goal.
