Fat distribution in men
Fat distribution in men describes where body fat prefers to accumulate and which hormonal and genetic factors influence this distribution. It differs fundamentally from fat distribution in women and has both aesthetic and health significance.
Typical patterns of fat distribution in men:
- Predominant accumulation in the abdominal area (abdominal fat distribution), i.e. around the waist and upper abdomen.
- Relatively less fat accumulation on hips, thighs or buttocks (compared to fat distribution in women).
Fat distribution is essentially controlled by hormones:
- A high testosterone level favors central fat distribution (abdominal area) and at the same time helps to keep the general body fat mass lower.
- If the testosterone level drops - for example with increasing age or hormonal disorders - the fat percentage can increase and the fat distribution changes unfavorably.
The accumulation of so-called visceral fat – fat that accumulates in the abdominal cavity around the internal organs – is particularly critical. Visceral fat is associated with an increased risk of:
- Cardiovascular diseases
- Diabetes mellitus
- Metabolic disorders (metabolic syndrome)
A conscious lifestyle with a balanced diet, regular physical activity and the maintenance of a healthy hormone balance can have a positive influence on fat distribution.
Fat distribution in men also plays a role in aesthetic medicine, e.g. when planningliposuction or reconstructive surgery.
