Circumcision
Circumcision is a surgical procedure in which the foreskin – the skin covering the glans (the tip of the penis) – is completely or partially removed. This procedure can be performed for various reasons: for medical, religious, cultural or hygienic reasons.
Circumcision may be medically necessary, for example, if the foreskin is too tight and cannot be retracted or can only be retracted painfully. This so-called phimosis can cause discomfort when urinating, cleaning or during sexual intercourse.
Circumcision as part of modern intimate surgery
In intimate surgery for men, circumcision is performed either for medical reasons or at the patient’s request – for example, for aesthetic or hygienic reasons. Some men also opt for circumcision because they hope it will improve their sexual sensation or make it easier to care for their intimate area.
In modern intimate surgery, the procedure can be performed using various techniques – e.g. with a scalpel, laser or special stapling methods – often on an outpatient basis and under local anesthesia. Partial circumcision, in which only part of the foreskin is removed, is also possible.
Healing usually takes one to two weeks after the procedure. Physical exertion and sexual intercourse should be avoided during this time.
