Balanitis
Balanitis is the medical term for inflammation of the glans of the penis. It can occur in boys and men of all ages and is not contagious, but is often unpleasant.
Typical symptoms are
- Redness or swelling of the glans
- Burning, itching or pain
- sometimes also a whitish coating or discharge
- unpleasant odor
In many cases, balanitis is caused by inadequate or excessive intimate hygiene, irritants in soaps or shower gels, but also by fungi, bacteria or skin diseases. Men with foreskin constriction (phimosis) are particularly affected because germs can settle more easily.
Treatment depends on the cause and is usually carried out with ointments or creams. In the case of repeated inflammation, a medical examination may be advisable.
