Skin matrix
The skin matrix is the scaffold that ensures the structure and stability of the skin. It consists of a complex network of proteins and other molecules in the dermis (middle layer of the skin) and forms the basis in which skin cells are embedded.
Important components of the skin matrix are
- Collagen (structural protein that gives the skin firmness)
- Elastin (protein that enables the skin to be stretchy and elastic)
- Glycosaminoglycans (long sugar molecules that bind water and hydrate the skin)
- Fibroblasts (special skin cells that produce components of the matrix)
In medicine, the term “skin matrix” is also used for specially prepared biological tissue products that are used in surgical procedures. These medical skin matrices usually come from donor tissue and also consist mainly of collagen and elastin – but without living cells. They serve as a biological scaffold for the regeneration of the body’s own tissue.
Areas of application for a skin matrix include
- Reconstructive surgery (e.g. after injuries or tumor removal)
- Wound healing for chronic wounds
- Tissue reinforcement for surgical procedures (e.g. breast reconstruction or intimate surgery)
The use of a skin matrix supports the healing process, strengthens the natural tissue and improves the aesthetic result.
