Premature ejaculation
Premature ejaculation (medical term: ejaculatio praecox) describes a sexual dysfunction in whichejaculation occurs faster than the man or his partner would like. Typically, ejaculation occurs either before penetration of the vagina or shortly afterwards, often within a few minutes.
In medicine, premature ejaculation is considered to require treatment when it occurs:
- occurs regularly,
- significantly impairs sexual satisfaction
- and causes psychological distress in one or both partners.
Possible causes of premature ejaculation
- Psychological factors such as anxiety, stress, insecurity or relationship problems
- Physical causes such as hypersensitivity of the tip of the penis or hormonal influences (e.g. low serotonin levels)
- Genetic predisposition (a rapid ejaculation reaction can run in families)
Treatment options
- Behavioral therapy approaches (e.g. special techniques such as the stop-start method or the squeeze technique)
- Medication such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or local anesthetic creams
- Relationship counseling and sex therapy to deal with emotional factors
Important: Premature ejaculation is very common and easily treatable. An open discussion with a doctor or sex therapist can help to find suitable solutions and significantly improve quality of life.
