Posthitis (inflammation of the foreskin of the penis)
The term posthitis refers to inflammation of the foreskin of the penis. The foreskin is the fold of skin that covers and protects the glans (the tip of the penis). Inflammation means that the tissue is red, swollen or tender and often causes pain. Posthitis can occur in men of any age, but is particularly common in men with a tight foreskin (medical term: phimosis) or a lack of intimate hygiene.
As we look at procedures such as penis enlargement, penis lengthening and penis thickening, it is important to understand posthitis. Any existing inflammation must be recognized and treated prior to treatment to avoid additional risks.
Causes of posthitis
Inflammation of the foreskin can be caused by various factors:
1. infections
- Bacteria: Common triggers are bacteria that accumulate under the foreskin.
- Fungi: Candida fungi in particular can cause an infection.
- Viruses: In rare cases, viruses can also play a role.
2. irritations
- Chemical substances such as soaps, shower gels or intimate sprays can irritate the skin.
- Allergies to detergents or condoms with latex can also be triggers.
3. mechanical causes
- Frequent friction through sexual intercourse or tight clothing can cause small injuries that become inflamed.
4. pre-existing conditions
- Men with diabetes mellitus have an increased risk, as sugar in the urine can promote fungal growth.
- Phimosis (narrowing of the foreskin) makes cleaning more difficult and favors infections.
Symptoms of posthitis
The symptoms can vary in severity. Typical symptoms are
- Redness and swelling of the foreskin
- Pain or burning, especially when retracting the foreskin
- Discharge under the foreskin, sometimes foul-smelling
- Itching in the area of the glans and foreskin
- Difficulty urinating if the swelling is severe
It is not uncommon for posthitis to occur together with inflammation of the glans. This combination is known as balanoposthitis.
Diagnosis of foreskin inflammation
The diagnosis is usually made through a physical examination. A doctor looks for redness, swelling and possible plaque. In addition, swabs can be taken to find out whether bacteria or fungi are involved.
Treatment options
The therapy depends on the cause of the inflammation:
1. general measures
- Thorough but gentle intimate hygiene with clear water (without aggressive soaps).
- Wear loose cotton underwear to avoid friction and moisture.
2. medication
- Antifungal creams for fungal infections.
- Antibiotic ointments or tablets for bacterial infections.
- Creams containing cortisone can help with severe inflammation in the short term.
3. surgical measures
- If posthitis occurs again and again, a circumcision (circumcision) may be recommended. This involves removing all or part of the foreskin.
- If phimosis is present, an operation to widen the foreskin may be necessary.
Prevention of foreskin inflammation
There are some simple measures to prevent posthitis:
- Regular cleaning of the foreskin and glans with water.
- Avoid aggressive care products in the intimate area.
- Use condoms to prevent sexually transmitted infections.
- Control of blood sugar levels in diabetes.
Meaning in connection with penis enlargement
For our center, it is particularly important that no acute posthitis is present before surgical procedures such as penis enlargement, penis thickening or penis enlargement. For this reason, we carefully check for signs of inflammation before each treatment. If posthitis is detected, it must first be treated completely. Only then can a planned procedure be carried out safely.
Posthitis at a glance
Posthitis is an inflammation of the foreskin of the penis that can be triggered by infection, irritation or mechanical stress. Typical symptoms are redness, swelling, pain and sometimes discharge. Treatment depends on the cause and includes hygiene measures, creams or, in severe cases, surgery. For procedures such as penis lengthening, penis thickening or penis enlargement, it is crucial that there is no acute posthitis in order to avoid complications.
