Penis circumference in resting position
The girth of the penis refers to the circumference – i.e. the measured distance around the cross-section of the penis – either in a flaccid state(resting position) or in an erect state(erection). Alongside length, it is an important measure of the external dimensions of the penis and plays a role in both body sensation and sexual function.
Differences between resting position and erection:
- At rest: The girth is usually significantly smaller. On average, the circumference of the penis in a flaccid state is around 9 to 10 cm.
- In erection: The filling of the cavernous bodies (corpora cavernosa) with blood significantly increases the girth. The average erect penis girth is around 11 to 12 cm.
The expansion of the penis during the transition from the resting position to erection is known as tumescence.
Medical and aesthetic significance:
- A harmonious ratio of length and circumference contributes to the overall aesthetic impression.
- The girth influences the subjective sexual experience of both partners, for example through the sensation of fullness and pressure during intercourse.
- Disorders or asymmetries in girth development can make medical interventions such as penis thickening advisable.
Important for measurements:
- The circumference is typically measured at the widest point of the shaft using a flexible measuring tape.
- Temperature, physical arousal and external influences can cause the values to vary slightly.
