PDE-5 inhibitors (e.g. Viagra, Cialis)
PDE-5 inhibitors are a group of drugs that are used to improve the ability to achieve an erection in men. Today, they are among the most important treatment options for erectile dysfunction (erectile dysfunction).
How do PDE-5 inhibitors work?
PDE-5 inhibitors block an enzyme in the body called phosphodiesterase type 5 ( PDE-5 for short). This enzyme normally breaks down a messenger substance(cGMP) that is responsible for relaxing the vascular muscles in the penis.
When PDE-5 is inhibited, more cGMP is retained. This allows the blood vessels to dilate better, the blood flows more easily into thecavernous bodies of the penis(corpora cavernosa) – and an erection is made possible or improved.
Important to know:
PDE-5 inhibitors only work with sexual stimulation. No erection occurs without appropriate stimulation.
Known active ingredients and trade names:
- Sildenafil (trade name: Viagra®)
- Tadalafil (trade name: Cialis®)
