A transplant is tissue that is removed from one part of the body or provided by a donor to be implanted or replaced in another part of the body. The aim of a transplant is to restore lost, damaged or missing tissue functionally and/or aesthetically.
Types of transplants:
- Autologous transplant (own tissue): Tissue is taken from the patient's own body (e.g. skin, fatty tissue, blood vessels) and reused in another location. Example: autologous fat transplantation for penis thickening.
- Allogeneic transplant (foreign tissue): Tissue comes from a donor of the same species (e.g. human skin matrix from donors).
- Xenogenic transplant (tissue from another species): Tissue comes from another animal species (e.g. pig skin in wound care - less common in intimate surgery).
Properties and requirements for transplants:
- Good tolerability (low immune reaction)
- Ability to grow together with the recipient tissue
- Possibility of restoring the original structure and function
- Low risk of infection or rejection
Areas of application:
- Plastic-reconstructive surgery (e.g. skin or fat transplants)
- Organ transplants (e.g. kidney, heart - not relevant in the intimate area)
- Tissue reinforcement and volume augmentation in aesthetic and intimate surgery
In the field of intimate surgery, autologous transplants are mainly used, as they are particularly well tolerated and enable a natural, stable result.
