Genital hygiene
Genital hygiene refers to the regular and appropriate cleaning of the external genital organs in order to promote health, well-being and protection against infection. For men in particular, genital hygiene includes the care of the penis, foreskin(if present), scrotum and adjacent skin areas.
Important aspects of genital hygiene in men:
- Daily cleansing: The genitals should be cleaned daily with lukewarm water and a mild, pH-neutral soap or special intimate wash lotions.
- Foreskin care: If a foreskin is present, it should be carefully retracted and the underlying areas (especially the glans and frenulum) should be cleaned to remove smegma (a natural but problematic mixture of sebum and dead skin cells when excessively accumulated).
- Gentle drying: After cleaning, the area should be dried gently but thoroughly to avoid moisture build-up and skin irritation.
- Avoid irritating products: Strongly perfumed soaps, shower gels or aggressive disinfectants can irritate sensitive skin and should be avoided.
Why genital hygiene is important:
- It prevents infections such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans), fungal infections or urinary tract infections.
- It reduces unpleasant odors.
- It supports general sexual health and well-being.
Special situations:
Particularly careful genital hygiene is recommended after sporting activities, before and after sexual contact and in the presence of certain diseases (e.g. diabetes mellitus).
