Expectation vs. reality
The term “expectation vs. reality” describes the discrepancy that often exists between the expectations that patients develop before a medical or aesthetic procedure and the actual results that are achieved after the treatment.
Expectations arise from various influences, such as
- Advertising and idealized representations in the media
- Testimonials from other patients
- Personal wishes or uncertainties
- Consultations with medical professionals
Reality, on the other hand, is determined by many objective factors:
- the individual physical conditions of the patient (e.g. skin elasticity, healing ability)
- the medical possibilities and limitations of an intervention
- the experience and technique of the attending physician
- Unpredictable healing processes or complications
Particularly in aesthetic or reconstructive medicine, it is crucial that patients develop a realistic idea of what can actually be achieved through treatment – and what cannot.
A professional medical consultation should serve to correct false expectations and present the realistic options in an understandable way. This reduces the risk of dissatisfaction after the procedure and supports patient satisfaction in the long term.
Important note: Unrealistic expectations can lead to disappointment, even if the medical outcome is objectively successful. Conversely, realistically informed patients can perceive even small improvements as very positive.
