Erection
An erection refers to the erection and stiffening of the penis as a result of an increased blood supply to the corporacavernosa. It is a natural physiological process and a prerequisite for sexual intercourse.
An erection is the result of a complex interplay of nerve impulses, vascular reactions, hormonal influences and muscle relaxation:
- Sexual arousal or certain sensory impressions trigger impulses in the nervous system.
- These signals cause the blood vessels in the penis to dilate and increase the flow of blood into the erectile tissue.
- At the same time, the outflow of blood is reduced by the contraction of the surrounding muscles, so that the blood is “dammed up” in the penis and it remains stiff.
Important for a healthy erection are a well-functioning vascular system (for sufficient blood flow), an intact nervous system (to control reactions) and a balanced hormone balance (especially a normal testosterone level).
Erections do not only occur during sexual arousal, but also spontaneously, for example during sleep(nocturnal erections), which is a sign of intact physical function.
Erectile dysfunction can indicate various problems, such as erectile dysfunction, vascular diseases or hormonal disorders.
