Erectile function
Erectile function describes a man’s physical ability to achieve and maintain an erection that is sufficient for sexual intercourse or sexual activity. It is a complex process that requires the smooth interaction of several body systems.
The following factors are decisive for normal erectile function:
- A healthy nervous system that processes sexual stimuli and transmits corresponding impulses to the penis.
- A functioning vascular system that enables a sufficient blood supply to the corpora cavernosa.
- A stable hormone balance, in particular a sufficient testosterone level, which supports sexual desire and tissue health.
- A functioning musculature in the area of the pelvic floor, which maintains the blood congestion in the penis.
In addition to physical aspects, psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, relationship problems or depression can also influence erectile function.
Limited erectile function may indicate erectile dysfunction, especially if the difficulties persist over a longer period of time. In such cases, a medical examination is advisable in order to identify and treat possible organic or psychological causes.
Erectile function is also an important indicator of general health, as it is closely linked to the functioning of the heart, blood vessels and endocrine system.
