Ejaculation
Ejaculation refers to the discharge of semen (seminal fluid) from the male urethra, usually as a result of a sexual climax(orgasm). It is a natural, reflex-controlled process that plays an important role in reproduction.
Ejaculation takes place in two phases:
- Emission: In this phase, sperm from the epididymis (site of sperm maturation) and secretions from the seminal vesicles, the prostate and other glands are transported into the posterior urethra.
- Expulsion: The semen is then forcefully expelled through the urethra by rhythmic muscle contractions.
Ejaculation is controlled by the autonomic nervous system, in particular by the sympathetic nerve branch, which regulates unconscious bodily functions. It normally occurs together with orgasm, but the two processes can theoretically be separated.
Ejaculation disorders – such as delayed ejaculation, premature ejaculation or retrograde ejaculation (reflux of semen into the bladder) – can have both organic and psychological causes and are treatable.
