Autologous fat injection
Autologous fat injection is a surgical procedure in which the body’s own fatty tissue is removed, processed and then injected into specific areas of the body in order to build up volume, improve contours or compensate for tissue defects.
First, the fat is removed from a suitable area of the body – for example the abdomen, thighs or buttocks – using liposuction. After removal, the fatty tissue is specially processed to remove unwanted components such as blood, oil and tissue fluid. The purified fat is then injected in small quantities into the desired target region using fine cannulas.
Autologous fat injection is used in a variety of ways in plastic aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, for example:
- for volume augmentation (e.g. on the face, chest or buttocks)
- for scar correction
- for tissue filling after injuries or operations
- as part of penis enlargement to increase girth
A major advantage of autologous fat injections is that they are very well tolerated, as only the body’s own material(autologous tissue) is used. The risk of rejection reactions or allergies is therefore minimal.
As some of the injected fat can be broken down again by the body, several treatments are sometimes necessary to achieve the desired end result. The final result is usually visible after a few months.
