Permanent erection (priapism) - A urological emergency
- Erection
When an erection becomes a medical problem
If you are currently experiencing an erection that lasts longer than four hours, please stop reading and go to the nearest emergency room immediately! Priapism is a real medical emergency that can cause irreversible damage.
What you need to know about priapism
A permanent erection is not a result of sexual arousal, but a congestion of blood in the erectile tissue of the penis. An erection that lasts longer than 4 hours is a urological emergency. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent damage and impotence.
The two types of priapism
Low-flow priapism (ischemic):
- Painful and dangerous
- The blood cannot flow out of the erectile tissue
- Requires immediate treatment
- Most common form (over 90% of cases)
High-flow priapism (non-ischemic):
- Mostly painless
- Often occurs after injuries
- Less acute, but in need of treatment
Recognize possible triggers
Medication:
- Erectile stimulants in overdose
- Antidepressants and psychotropic drugs
- Blood pressure medication
- Blood-thinning medication
- Injection therapy for erectile dysfunction
Immediate measures and treatment
If priapism is suspected:
- To the emergency room immediately!
- No attempts at self-treatment
- Inform the doctors about all medication you are taking
- Name possible underlying diseases
Prevention and risk minimization
Use erectile stimulants responsibly:
- Never exceed the recommended dose
- Do not combine with alcohol or other drugs
- Ask your doctor first if you have heart problems
- Observe the warnings on the packaging
After a priapism, urological follow-up is important. Further examinations may be necessary to clarify the cause and prevent recurrences. Do not be afraid to talk openly about any consequential damage or fears.
Can permanent damage occur?
Yes, that’s why it’s so important to act quickly. The longer the priapism lasts, the higher the risk of permanent erectile dysfunction.
