Why does the penis look the way it does?
The shape of the human penis - a result of evolution and mate choice
The human penis looks different to that of many animals. It is longer, thicker and has a striking shape – more comparable to the penis of a horse than that of a monkey. Why is that? The answer lies in evolution – and in female choice of partner. Women have unconsciously helped decide how the male body develops over many generations. In this blog post, we explain this simply and positively.
1. the human penis is unique
Compared to other primates such as chimpanzees or gorillas, the human penis is significantly larger. Its shape is also different: less curved, stronger, with a pronounced glans. These differences are not accidental. They have evolved over millions of years – because they are advantageous for reproduction.
2. women have unconsciously co-decided
Scientists believe that women’s choice of partner played an important role in this development. During sex, women preferred men with a penis that was longer and thicker. Why? Because it is easier to feel, can penetrate deeper and makes the sexual experience more intense. This preference was passed down through many generations – and so the penis as we know it today gradually evolved.
Studies from evolutionary biology, e.g. from the University of Ottawa and the Australian National University, confirm this: Women find larger and more powerfully shaped penises more attractive. Over time, this natural selection has therefore helped to shape what the male body looks like today.
3. the comparison with the horse - no coincidence
Even if it sounds unusual at first glance, the shape of the human penis is in some respects more reminiscent of a horse’s penis than that of our closest animal relatives. Horses also have long, straight and smooth penises. This shape ensures effective contact during sexual intercourse and supports successful semen transfer. A similar effect can be assumed in humans – combined with the female preference for this shape.
Conclusion
The shape of the human penis is no coincidence and not purely the result of biological necessity. It has also developed through the unconscious choice of women over many generations. Women prefer certain shapes that intensify the sexual experience – and this is exactly what evolution has adopted over the millennia. Nature is amazingly clever – and sometimes surprising.
