Testicle pain during sport? What you need to know
- Urology
Why your "crown jewels" deserve special protection
Testicular pain during sport is more common than you think and is usually harmless – but you should take it seriously.
Is testicular pain normal during sport?
Occasional, slight pain can occur and is harmless. These are reactions of the tissue receptors to the physical training. Sometimes there are small, radiating injuries to the muscles.
When does it become dangerous?
If you experience sudden, severe pain or swelling, you should consult a doctor immediately. You may have a testicular torsion, which must be treated immediately.
Understanding the most common causes
Your testicles are sensitive organs that need special protection. Various factors can lead to pain during sport:
Mechanical causes:
- Insufficient support due to underwear that is too loose
- Of course also: Direct impacts or injuries (especially in contact sports)
- Overstretching of the spermatic cord muscles due to jerky movements
- Friction during long endurance loads
Circulatory causes:
- Reduced blood circulation during extreme physical exertion
- Testicular torsion (twisting of the testicle - emergency!)
- Varicose veins in the testicles (varicocele)
Warning signals that you need to take seriously
See a doctor immediately if:
- Sudden, very severe pain
- Swelling or hardening of a testicle
- Nausea and vomiting together with testicular pain
- Pain that persists even at rest
- Visible changes (redness, discoloration)
These symptoms may indicate a testicular torsion, which must be operated on within a few hours!
Optimal training
- Thorough warm-up before intensive exercise
- Gradual increase in training intensity
- Sufficient regeneration breaks
- Don't forget to hydrate (drink)
What you can do if you have complaints
First aid measures:
- Interrupt training immediately
- Cooling with a cold pack wrapped in a towel
- Raising the legs in supine position
- If the pain persists: consult a doctor
Can certain sports be more problematic?
Yes, contact sports such as soccer or martial arts carry a higher risk of injury. But friction can also cause discomfort when cycling or running.
Focus on long-term health
Regular self-examination of the testicles is important – not just because of sports injuries. Feel your testicles once a month under a warm shower and look for changes. Testicular cancer is the most common type of cancer in young men, but is very curable if detected early.
